Last Tuesday evening, I had the opportunity to try the items currently featured on the menu at Pepas Arepas, an East-Austin food trailer, courtesy of the awesome people at Yelp.
We started off with some yucca chips which were a delicious alternative to potato chips or fries and paired well with their green chile salsa.
Next was the vegetarian option, a Greek-inspired arepa with a huge slice of feta cheese. It was a pleasant surprise.
The next dish featured a fried avocado on top a bed of chicken salad which was not my favorite. Fried avocado is just too much for me. The chicken salad was great though.
The pork dish came with pickled red onions, a generous amount of greens, and flavorful, soft, pulled pork. The flavors meshed together wonderfully.
The last dish stole the show for me, being that it featured bulgogi beef and had a kick of cucumber kimchi. If I were to order a full arepa, this is the one I would choose.
We were also given a punch card – your 8th arepa is free at Pepas, so I’ll have to make my way back some time.
I was feeling a bit groggy and anti-social this day, but I am very glad I decided to come to this event. Meeting new people, talking about food, drinking, and eating food really makes for an enjoyable time.
